The dream of Waters Edge Church began in late 1997.  Our Lead Pastor, Stuart Hodges and his wife walked away from one of their first seminary chapel services and knew that God had ignited in their hearts a passion for starting a new church. For them, it was a passion for a new kind of church…and a desire to do church differently.

Over the next few years this passion in Stuart’s heart grew, and he brought people into this vision to share in the dream.  50 people made up the start team for Waters Edge Church, and their stories are amazing for how God stirred their hearts for a new ministry…a new kind of church.  On December 3rd, 2002, this team met for the first time and immediately it was obvious that God had assembled this team; wonderfully diverse, extraordinarily gifted, and passionate about the vision of Waters Edge Church. And so our story began…

And it continues today. Waters Edge Church began meeting at the Victory Family YMCA on March 16, 2003 for it’s first public worship service. Over 300 friends, family, and members of our community joined us to celebrate our opening day. It was a great start for a new chapter in the life of Waters Edge Church.

In March 2006 after experiencing 3 years of exponential growth, we kicked off The Big Dream Spiritual Initiative to push towards our goal of having a greater impact in this community.  To accommodate for continued growth, in March of 2008, we began an identical evening service at the Yoder Barn Theatre.  In August 2008, we broke ground for our new building at 6830 George Washington Memorial Highway, in Yorktown, and in June 2009 we moved into our new building, and began a fourth service!

God has used our new building to reach so many more people.  So many, in fact, that we are at Capacity!  After a successful Capacity Campaign in May 2010, we plan to launch a multi-site strategy in the very near future.  We will be one church with the same vision, same pastor, same culture, but in multiple locations.  One church, multiple locations.  More people than ever experiencing life change…and soon even closer to where they live and work!
